Berlin, Germany - October 6, 2009. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading system integrator for fuel cells, announces its acquisition of a major order for the delivery of an autonomous power supply solution for the University of Applied Sciences Wildau in Germany. The complete solution will be used to supply energy to selected applications in a building and shall serve as a link between training and applied research. The project has a total volume of nearly half a million Euros.

The complete solution is a hybrid energy storage system consisting of a battery, fuel cell, electrolyser and adapted power electronics that can store solar or wind-generated power to be generated in the building. This allows for a self-sufficient total solution regardless of solar radiation or wind availability. In addition to the integration of four of the just launched Heliocentris Nexa 1200 fuel cell systems, one of the key aspects of the project is the development of hardware and software for energy management. The energy management delivered by Heliocentris will manage and optimise all energy flows within the system to ensure maximum availability of energy. It is planned to further optimise the energy management jointly with the customer during the test phase of the solution.

Dr. Henrik Colell, CEO, commented: “We are proud to be able to realise such a completely integrated solution for a customer and therefore consider ourselves very much in line with the trend of offering intelligent storage solutions for renewable energies. Heliocentris’ expertise in hydrogen and fuel cells, as well as in providing management solutions for more complex energy systems will come to fruition in this project.”

Thomas Lehne, Chancellor of the University of Applied Sciences Wildau: “The Department Physics Engineering is one of the leading of our strongly research oriented University. We have the expectation that the cooperation with Heliocentris will not be limited to the pure power supply technology but will lead to new impulses also in the field of energy management of renewable energies.”

Berlin, Germany - October 6, 2009. In the fourth quarter of 2009, Heliocentris will launch the...

Berlin, Germany - October 6, 2009. In the fourth quarter of 2009, Heliocentris will launch the Heliocentris Nexa® 1200, a completely new fuel cell module developed by Heliocentris based on the FCgen 1020 ACS stack from Ballard, with a power output of 1.2 kW.

As a partner of Ballard Power Systems, Heliocentris has sold the Nexa® Power Module around the world for the past five years. Heliocentris has integrated the fuel cell modules in training systems and numerous turnkey projects. For independent integration of the fuel cell module by the customer, Heliocentris also developed matching integration components. More than five years of experience in sales and servicing created the ideal basis for development of a proprietary system.

A new generation of modules

The goal of the Heliocentris development team was to create a follow-up generation for the popular fuel cell module that can not only match the power output of the former system, but also offer significant improvements. "The development of a mere replacement was never a desirable goal for us," says Klaus Rupprecht, Head of Product Development.

The parasitic power consumption could be reduced by up to 50%, thus significantly increasing the overall system efficiency of the Heliocentris Nexa 1200 as compared with the former model. This was achieved by the concept of atmospheric air supply in combination with the air-cooled stack.

Whilst the old Nexa® Power Module requires a compressor and a fan for the supply of reaction and cooling air, the Heliocentris Nexa 1200 uses a single fan on the back of the system drawing in ambient air for even distribution through the entire system. In addition to improved cooling, this made it possible to eliminate components such as a compressor or cooling water pump, which cause significant parasitic loads.

The system is therefore especially suitable for applications requiring long operating times with a limited hydrogen supply, for example in backup systems for standalone photovoltaic systems or uninterrupted power supply systems.

Optimized for easy integration

The fully integrated Heliocentris Nexa® 1200 contains all system components in a stable plastic housing, which also functions as a component rack and air baffle system. Inadvertent manipulation or short circuits on the stack, which can be caused by falling objects, are not possible. It is not necessary to enclose the system prior to integration. In this respect, the Heliocentris Nexa® 1200 eliminates complex integration processes. "Solely for the purpose of directed dissipation of cooling air, many of our customers have integrated the system from Ballard in a box," explains Klaus Rupprecht; "with the Heliocentris Nexa® 1200 we have already solved this problem. The air outlet is designed for easy attachment of an exhaust air duct. Draining the water accumulated during the reaction is also facilitated. It evaporates with the cooling air." It is therefore not necessary to drain the water from the application.

The Heliocentris Nexa® 1200 has a central interface unit on the back. With respect to orientation of the fuel cell module in the application, the system is likewise more flexible. While the system from Ballard could be installed only in upright position, the Heliocentris Nexa® 1200 can be installed vertically, horizontally and over head. The profile rails embedded in the housing enable easy mounting of the system in upright or suspended position. The system is also optimized for integration in 19" racks.

Fit for the series

For use in series applications the fuel cell module fulfills the requirements of integrators. The system is equipped with an internal safety loop allowing also for integration of external components, such as an external hydrogen warning system, and conforms to the fuel cell standard EN 62282. Simple maintenance tasks, such as changing filters, can even be carried out by the user. An integrated error memory facilitates diagnosis in the event of an outage.

Availability

The Heliocentris Nexa® 1200 will be available in Europe starting the fourth quarter of 2009, initially as a lab system. Markets outside of Europe will be covered by the end of the first quarter of 2010. In addition to the fuel cell module, the product bundle includes a start-up kit for fast and easy system start-up, as well as monitoring software. An optional electronic load can also be purchased from Heliocentris.

Toward the end of the first quarter of 2010 Heliocentris will also offer an Overall System Controller (OSC) for the control of complex energy systems, consisting of several sources and drains, and a DC converter for battery hybridization.

Heliocentris delivers electrolyzer for hydrogen filling station

Berlin – June 30, 2009. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading fuel cell system integrator,...

Berlin – June 30, 2009. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading fuel cell system integrator, announced the successful, on-schedule delivery of an electrolyzer to the city of Barth in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The electrolyzer will be used for fueling the city’s hybrid midi-bus as well as for optimizing the sewage treatment plant. Last year, Heliocentris already successfully integrated a 32kW fuel cell system in the city’s midi-bus.

"Having successfully completed the fuel cell bus integration, we are pleased to have also delivered the complimenting hydrogen generation system. This further demonstrates our competence and ability to deliver comprehensive solutions in the hydrogen and fuel cell technology arena" said Dr. Henrik Colell, CEO of Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG.

The hydrogen electrolyzer from Hydrogenics delivers 10 m3 of hydrogen per hour and will generate the hydrogen required to operate the fuel cell bus. A major advantage for the city of Barth is the simultaneous generation of 5 m3 of oxygen per hour, which will be used to increase the capacity of the local sewage treatment plant.

"Heliocentris submitted the bid with the best price-performance ratio and convinced us that we made the right decision throughout the implementation of the project," Mr. Hellwig, Project Director of the City of Barth, adds with satisfaction.

Berlin, Germany – June 23, 2009. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading fuel cell system integrator, announces the company’s introduction of reporting of key figures on a quarterly basis starting with Q1 2009, to increase transparency.

In the first quarter, Heliocentris was able to continue the dynamic growth of the two previous years, with a growth in sales of 26 percent, despite the difficult market environment. Group sales totaled EUR 0.58 million (Q1 2008: EUR 0.47 million). The deficit totaled EUR -0.58 million (Q1 2008: EUR -0.46 million). This planned increase in the deficit reflects the company’s growth strategy and the accompanying increase of employees in R&D and Sales & Marketing as compared with the same period of the preceding year. At the end of the quarter, the company’s liquid funds totaled EUR 1.72 million, and this amount was increased substantially in April 2009 due to a capital increase of EUR 4 million. All figures are unaudited. One of the highlights of the first quarter was the signing of an OEM contract with the Lucas-Nülle Group GmbH (Kerpen-Sindorf, Germany) a leading engineering, training and educational equipment company.

Corporate News:
Berlin, Germany – May 25 2009. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading fuel cell...

Corporate News:

Berlin, Germany – May 25 2009. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading fuel cell system integrator, today announced its financial results in accordance with German Accounting Standards (HGB) for the fiscal year 2008, ending December 31, 2008. The company achieved Group revenues of EUR 2.57 million (2007: EUR 2.09 million), which is a 23 % increase over 2007. The company reports a net loss of EUR 2.29 million compared to a net loss of EUR 1.39 million in the previous year and was thus in line with the company's expectations.

Highlights of the Year 2008:

Integration of a 32 kW fuel cell system in a midi bus of the city of Barth and receipt of the follow-up order for the delivery of an electrolyser for the hydrogen fuelling of the fuel cell bus

Expansion of the cooperation with Ballard Power Systems through an agreement to integrate Ballard´s new generation of fuel cells and through the exclusive worldwide takeover of customer service for Ballard´s Nexa Power Module

Presentation of system prototypes at the Hannover Fair based on fuel cell stacks of our strategic partners Ballard Power Systems and Schunk

Group revenues for the full year 2008 amounted to EUR 2.57 million (2007: EUR 2.09 million). The increase in revenue by 23 % resulted primary from significantly increased sales in America and Germany. The revenue related gross profit increased slightly from 47 % in 2007 to 48 % in 2008. Revenues from sales outside Germany decreased slightly from 81 % in 2007 to 77 % in 2008.

Total operating expenses for the full year 2008 were EUR 3.74 million (2007: EUR 2.50 million). Human resource expenses grew mainly due to the hiring of new personnel to EUR 2.09 million in 2008 from EUR 1.21 million in 2007. As of December 31, 2008 Heliocentris had 41 employees (December 31 2007: 26 employees). The hiring taking place mostly in sales, R&D and the project department constitute an important precondition for capturing market opportunities and strengthening the positioning of Heliocentris. Other operating expenses increased to EUR 1.65 million from EUR 1.29 million in 2007 resulting mainly from increased sales and marketing, R&D and other operating expenses partly reflecting the increased personnel. Also included are capital market as well as investor relations costs of EUR 0.24 million. The net loss for 2008 amounted to EUR 2.29 million, compared to EUR 1.39 million in 2007.

On December 31, 2008, the company had EUR 2.54 million in cash. The number of issued shares at December 31, 2008 was 2.25 million.

Dr. Henrik Colell, CEO of Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, comments: "We are pleased to have continued our growth story this year with a revenue increase of 23 %. The successful implementation of our project business, visible by the projects delivered as well as by the orders already acquired for delivery in 2009, is an important milestone for our company. Based on the positive start of our business in the new year we are – despite the worldwide turbulences – confident to finish also the fiscal year 2009 with growth."

Corporate News:

Berlin, Germany - November 04, 2008. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, the fuel cell system integrator, announced today that the City of Barth in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania has awarded Heliocentris a contract to deliver an electrolyser for the supply of hydrogen to the City's hybrid midi-bus and to optimize the City's wastewater treatment facility. This new contract follows Heliocentris' successful integration of a 32 kW fuel cell system for use in the Barth midi-bus, earlier this year.

"This contract proves we can deliver fully functioning fuel cell systems together with the necessary hydrogen infrastructure for a transport system," said Dr. Henrik Colell, CEO of Heliocentris. "This contract will add significantly to our revenues in 2009."

The hydrogen electrolyser provided by Hydrogenics, which can deliver 10m3/hour of hydrogen, will be used to generate the necessary hydrogen to operate the fuel-cell bus. A major advantage of the electrolyser is the co-generation of oxygen (5m3/hour), which will be used to increase the capacity of the local wastewater treatment facility.

"Following the fast and successful integration of the fuel cell system for the midi-bus, we are very happy to have Heliocentris deliver the hydrogen infrastructure, also. We are confident Heliocentris will once again reliably deliver on schedule," said Mr. Hellwig, Project Manager of the City of Barth. "We are also expecting from the cooperation with Heliocentris a goal-orientated project delivery as we have already achieved with the hybrid bus."

Corporate News:

Berlin, Germany - September 29, 2008. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading fuel cell system integrator, today announced its preliminary half year results in accordance with German Accounting Standards (HGB). In the first six months of 2008 the company achieved revenues of EUR 1.23 million (2007: EUR 0.99 million), a 24 % increase over the first six months of 2007. The net loss was EUR 1.06 million compared to a net loss of EUR 0.59 million in the same period last year. On June 30, Heliocentris' cash position was EUR 3.98 million compared to EUR 5.43 million at the end of December 2007.

Revenues for the first half of 2008 were EUR 1.23 million (2007: EUR 0.99 million). The 24 % increase in revenues primarily resulted from strong business development in Germany and the US. Additionally, the increasing relevance of the project business has affected the half year sales positively. The completion of the hydrogen powered midi-bus project for the City of Barth marks the successful development of the project business. The gross profit relative to gross revenue decreased slightly and amounted to 47.8%. This is mainly a result from lower other income as part of gross revenue. The relative share of revenues from outside Germany decreased to 74 % compared to 91 % in the first half year, 2007.

Total operating expenses for the first six months 2008 were EUR 1.7 million (2007: EUR 1.2 million). Human resource expenses grew to EUR 0.97 million from EUR 0.56 million in the first half year 2007 due to headcount increases. Other operating expenses increased to EUR 0.68 million from EUR 0.56 million in the six months to June 30, 2007. At June 30 this year, Heliocentris had 36 employees (June 30, 2007: 22 employees).

The net loss for 2007 was EUR 1.06 million, compared to EUR 0.59 million in the first half of 2007. The increase in net loss resulted from the further expansion of the service, project, and R&D departments. On June 30 2008, the company had EUR 3.98 million in cash compared to EUR 5.43 million as of December 31 2007. The number of issued shares on June 30, 2008 was 2.25 million compared to 1.5 in the same period 2007.

Dr. Henrik Colell, CEO of Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG said: "With our revenues up 24%, Heliocentris achieved strong development in the six months to June 30, 2008. At the same time, we were able to reach important strategic milestones, including: the presentation of two new system platform prototypes; becoming the worldwide service provider of Ballard Power Systems for Nexaâ power modules; and the successful integration of a fuel cell system into the City of Barth's hydrogen powered midi-bus. All these achievements show a significant increase in our development dynamics."

The complete first Half Year Report as of June 30 is due out on September 29 2008 and can be downloaded from our homepage www.heliocentris.com.

Heliocentris Powers Shell Eco-marathon Winners to Victory

Berlin, Germany - June 10, 2008. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, the fuel cell system integrator,...

Berlin, Germany - June 10, 2008. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, the fuel cell system integrator, is proud to announce that the winner of this year's Shell Eco-marathon race in the hydrogen fuel cell class was equipped with a Heliocentris' fuel cell.

In the last three years of this prestigious event, teams using Heliocentris fuel cell systems have achieved a podium finish, in each and every year, being first in class on two occasions. The systems supplied by Heliocentris are the Nexa® Power Module of Ballard and Heliocentris' own NP50 fuel cell power system.

"These two systems are the bedrock of our fuel cell systems range and are being used throughout the world by thousands of fuel cell experts," said Dr. Henrik Colell, CEO of Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG. Having these systems used in the Shell Eco-marathon to such good effect is a great example of our technology and the quality of our systems. We congratulate Professor Ulrich Hochberg of the University of Applied Sciences of Offenburg and his team for winning the hydrogen fuel cell class this year," Dr. Colell added.

Professor Hochberg said: "We decided to use the fuel cell integrated in the Nexa® power module obtained from Heliocentris because after three years of research and use, the system is clearly one of the best in its class. We optimized the control electronics to achieve maximum output and ultra-high efficiency resulting in an outstanding system performance with respect to the Shell Eco-marathon requirements."

The team from the University of Applied Sciences (Offenburg, Germany) came first in the hydrogen fuel cell category this year. The prototype vehicle - "Schluckspecht" - achieved a competition best distance of 3198 km per the hydrogen equivalent of a liter of Shell Super benzine - about the same as traveling from Berlin to Bagdad.

The Nexa® Power Module is one of the most widely sold fuel cell systems in the 1 kW power class. The system is noted for its outstanding price to performance ratio and reliable operation. Similarly, the NP50 also boasts outstanding reliability and robustness in the 50 watt power class.

The Shell Eco-marathon Europe was held this year at the Nogaro Motor Circuit in France and included 200 teams from schools and universities in over 20 European countries. The principle of the race is to design and build a vehicle that uses the least amount of fuel to travel the farthest distance. The Shell Eco-marathon in its current form began in 1985 in France, attracting thousands of young engineers and scientists.

Total operating expenses for the full year 2007 were EUR 2.5 million (2006*: EUR 1.34 million). Human resource expenses grew to EUR 1.21 million in 2007 from EUR 0.68 million in 2006* The increase is particularly due to headcount increases at the end of 2006 and in 2007 in the sales and R&D departments. As of December 31, 2007 Heliocentris had 26 employees (December 31 2006: 20 employees). Other operating expenses increased to EUR 1.29 million from EUR 0.66 million in 2006* resulting from increased capital market expenses and other operating expenses. The net loss for 2007 amounted to EUR 1.39 million, compared to EUR 0.48 million in 2006*. This corresponds to a loss of EUR 0.62 per share compared to EUR -0.40 per share in 2006*.

On December 31, 2007, the company had EUR 5.43 million in cash compared to EUR 1.36 million as of December 31, 2006. Representing a four-fold increase compared to last year. The number of issued shares at December 31, 2007 was 2.25 million compared to 1.2 million at December 31, 2006.

Berlin, Germany - May 21, 2008. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading fuel cell system integrator, today announces a new agreement with strategic partner Ballard Power Systems (Canada), a world leader in clean energy fuel cell products. Under this new agreement Ballard has transferred the post-warranty technical customer service for its Nexaâ power modules to Heliocentris.

Ballard Power Systems has granted Heliocentris worldwide rights to operate as the technical customer service provider for Ballard's Nexaâ power modules. Heliocentris will now be the contact point for all previous and new customers, both industrial and academic, throughout the world. Heliocentris will provide product support and servicing for two years after the last Nexaâ power module sale, which is expected to be in 2009, as Ballard will stop production of these power modules in 2008. Heliocentris will, however, offer an improved successor product based on Ballard's next generation Mark1020 ACS(TM) fuel cells.

"This arrangement is validation of our servicing capabilities based on more than 10 years experience in marketing fuel cell systems," said Dr. Henrik Colell, CEO of Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG. "Furthermore, this shows the trust Ballard has in us."

"This agreement between Ballard and Heliocentris is based on four years of commercial cooperation between our companies," said Paul Cass, Director of Customer Service at Ballard Power Systems. "Throughout this time we have been impressed by Heliocentris' technological competence and quality of work," he added.

Heliocentris launches campaign for new industrial fuel cell systems at the Hanover trade show

Corporate News:
Berlin, Germany - April 21, 2008. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading fuel cell...

Corporate News:

Berlin, Germany - April 21, 2008. Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, a leading fuel cell system integrator, today presents three new industrial fuel cell systems at the Hanover trade show. The three new systems designed for OEM customers target different power classes and cooling systems. In the campaign Heliocentris demonstrates its extensive expertise as a system integrator. Heliocentris' new fuel cell systems integrate fuel cells from strategic partners Ballard Power Systems (Canada) and Schunk Group (Germany).

The entire fuel cell system beyond the fuel cell itself is based on Heliocentris' in house development. The objective of Heliocentris has been to design open systems for use in a broad range of industrial settings with a focus on size and technical requirements. By launching these new systems Heliocentris further strengthens its technological reputation and expands its positioning within the fuel cell value chain. At the same time the company is further building its lead position as a system integrator in the international fuel cell markets.

At the Hanover trade show Heliocentris will present two of these fuel cell systems equipped with Ballard's air-cooled fuel cells as examples of industrial applications. One system supplies back-up electricity with a performance of 350 W and is applied as an extension to an existing photovoltaic emergency power-supply. This system can be viewed at the SMA Technologie AG booth. The second system, displayed at Heliocentris' booth, is a 1200 W fuel cell system applied to a complete and self-sustaining power generation unit including hydrogen generation (electrolyser) and storage. The installation presented by Heliocentris is an example of a standalone grid-independent energy system.

In addition to these air-cooled systems, Heliocentris is presenting a water-cooled system platform using Schunk fuel cells. This compact system allows the use of heat loss, for example, for heating purposes, therefore increasing total efficiency of the system.

Dr Henrik Colell, CEO of Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG, comments: "This campaign strengthens Heliocentris' position as a leading system integrator for fuel cells and hydrogen applications. With these flexible fuel cell systems we can now easily adapt to our customer specific needs and requirements. The new systems allow us to now serve the demands of the market for industrial applications with its multitude of opportunities. "

Heliocentris has also developed a new logo and consistent corporate design. A completely redesigned portal is available at www.heliocentris.com.
